It all started after coaching
youth sports for several years
Just when I thought I had it all figured out, organizing a
Federation Baseball team in Michigan meant that I had to attend
PACE - Program for Athletic Coaches' Education, a fourteen hour
course on how to do it right! Needless to say it did help me
do things right or at least better than pre-course.
In a nut shell, the PHD instructor "coached the coaches"
on the concept of having a philosophy when it came to youth
sports. As an instructor, he reached me when he shared stories
of the impact (often negative) on youth when forced into an
athletic environment focused solely on winning. He emphasized
process rather than results and challenged everyone in the course
to adapt a coaching philosophy BEFORE the team was formed. This
challenge lead to the creation of the F.A.I.T.H. Philosophy
of Coaching and has been my mantra since that time. Thanks Doc!
So what is the F.A.I.T.H. philosophy? Simply that in sports,
like in business and in life, mastery of the elements that make
up this acronym are the keys to not only success but more importantly
self satisfaction and actualization. What "player"
can succeed if they do not have a handle on the Fundamentals
of their sport, business or position in life? And yet we see
fundamentally strong players that need more. That's where Attitude
comes in since teaming skills with a great "what to be
around me" Attitude creates a positive environment for
the team. Interest can also be call "Into it" which
generates a work ethic outside of the normal practice hours
or beyond the normal business day. It's a "practice when
your competition isn't" type of thing. And of course Teamwork
is the rope that connects the whole squad together and generates
the synergy to go beyond the sum of the individuals. The stronger
the rope the stronger the team and getting "individuals"
to understand this is a breakthrough to enlightenment. But your
ultimate success depends upon the last ingredient which is Hustle.
For without hustle, game plans and strategies become old news
as you read about lesser talented teams that out hustled you
to the victory
again in sports, business and life!
I believe in my heart that the teams that exhibit these five
elements are the teams that succeed, whether they win or lose.
After all there is many a team that executes these elements
to the best of their God given ability to only end up on the
loss side of the ledger.
So what's the point? It's beyond the hard work, the dedication,
the commitment, the sacrifice. It's about belief in you and
the quality teammates and coaches that surround you. It's about
focusing on the positives no matter how negative things appear.
And it's about the Faith you place in yourself and in your Creator
that everything will turn out just fine
win or lose.

F.A.I.T.H. Philosophy of Coaching and we stand ready willing
